Two events, one unified identity — Tri The Karoo and Thru The Karoo were developed as a cohesive sibling brand system rooted in the spirit of the Karoo. The visual language balances a strong, athletic energy with a refined, uncluttered approach, allowing high volumes of information to remain clear and engaging across social platforms. Built with flexibility in mind, the brand seamlessly accommodates future title sponsors while maintaining a distinctive, grounded character inspired by its environment.
Design a brand that could support two distinct endurance events, a triathlon and a marathon, while ensuring they feel connected under a single visual system. The identity needed to:
The solution focused on creating a modular identity system rather than two separate brands. By establishing a shared visual foundation, both events could maintain consistency while still holding their own identity.
A restrained design approach was key, reducing noise to allow important information and messaging to stand out clearly, especially in fast-moving social media environments.
The brand draws heavily from the tones and mood of the Karoo landscape, using a colour palette that feels both natural and distinctive. This is paired with bold, clean typography to reinforce a sense of strength and clarity.
Subtle variations in layout and naming allow each event to differentiate itself, while still feeling part of a cohesive system.
To support commercial growth, a comprehensive sponsor proposal was developed, showcasing both the strength of the brand identity and the measurable impact of the social media system.
The proposal positioned the events as credible, scalable platforms for brand exposure, combining clear visual consistency with proven audience growth. By presenting real performance metrics alongside a polished, professional identity, the events were able to stand confidently alongside more established races.
This approach played a key role in securing major partnerships, including Montego Pet Nutrition, Pick n Pay, Spur, Build It, Tyre-Mart, and 226ERS, among others, reinforcing the value of a strong, strategically built brand.
The brand system translated directly into measurable growth across digital platforms, particularly for Tri The Karoo. Over a three-year period, the event experienced a consistent blended growth of 50–70% year-on-year, with peak reach increases of up to 250% in a single year. This resulted in a steadily growing community of 2000+ followers across platforms — a strong achievement for a niche sport in a remote region like the Karoo.
Thru The Karoo saw immediate traction in its inaugural year, building a following of 1500+ across platforms. The early success highlighted the strength and adaptability of the shared brand system, proving its ability to launch and scale new events effectively from day one.
